You have been recognized globally as a business climate leader – named one of the “Titans” in the annual TIME’s 100 Climate list of 2023. Under your leadership, Volvo Group has earned a strong reputation for safety, quality, and a bold ambition: “lead the transition to fossil-free transportation” and “be carbon neutral by 2040.”
Words are not enough. If these are truly global goals, Volvo must lead both in words and actions– everywhere you operate.
In the US, where you, Martin Lundstedt, speak today about “clarity, transparency and intentions [being] paramount” to your future strategy, Volvo Group’s actions tell a different story – one of stalling, hypocrisy, and delays. We face a stark contrast: duplicity and opacity from your own company when it comes to scaling to zero-emission trucks (those heavy-duty vehicles without a polluting combustion engine).
In the US, Volvo is not leading but blocking progress. Alongside other truck manufacturers, Volvo Group North America has:
- Consistently opposed national and state clean truck standards through the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA)
- Contributed to misleading dealers on how the proposed state Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) rules work. Truck dealers are being made to believe these rules prevent them from selling cleaner diesel truck models, creating anxiety and undermining regulations that Volvo itself previously agreed not to oppose as part of the Clean Truck Partnership.
- Priced electric trucks up to $80,000 higher in North America compared to similar models sold in Europe, with no clear justification for the discrepancy.
- Invested approximately $700 million in a new plant in Mexico set to produce diesel trucks for the US, Canada, and Latin America starting in 2026.
- Pushed biofuels and fossil gas as “clean alternatives” – “alternatives” that are still a source of pollution.
Volvo plays a pivotal role in the global transport, mobility, and infrastructure industries, impacting businesses and communities worldwide. While progress is being made, Volvo’s actions in the US are actively delaying the transition to clean technologies – actions with real consequences for the health, livelihoods, and future of the very communities you claim to serve.
Your reputation must be backed by action. We must deliver on your commitments and lead Volvo Group forward with bold steps:
- Accelerate Volvo’s zero-emissions investments and truck sales in the U.S. to be in line with your global commitments.
- Stop Volvo Group North America from pushing back and delaying clean truck regulations that are critical for the transition to zero-emission trucks.
- “Lead the transition” by championing strong standards and regulations that create the market certainty needed to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission trucks – and achieve your and collective global climate goals.
- Ensure transparency in pricing and establish financial solutions to make electric trucks accessible and affordable for all U.S. customers.
- Commit to real real zero-emissions solutions – trucks with no combustion engine. Stop promoting fossil gas, biofuels, and biodiesel, which can be as harmful–or worse– than diesel.
- Advance a just transition to electric that works for all across the truck industry value chain, including workers, drivers, small operators, pollution-impacted communities, and supply chain stakeholders.
